D300 manual white balance

Nikon has stated a recommended range for AWB at K in the D manual as they do with the most of their DSLRs, but Thom Hogan normally recommends only to use AWB in the K range. He doesn't mention this in his D review, but. I am using a D and trying to set a custom white balance using the "PRE" setting. I have followed the directions to do so to the letter, or at least I think so and my resulting white balances look awful. Not even close. I'm beginning to think it doesn't even work. Please note that the amber/blue compensation values, are based on Nikon's statement in the D manual, that compensating 1 step (e.g. from a1 to a2) changes the colour temperature with 5 Mired, and not any actual measurement from my side.

As an afterthought too try setting a manual white balance target image with the D If it's anything like the Canon EOS cameras then this manual white balance allows the camera to go much cooler than the settings themsevles would normally allow. I do this every time I use my D If I forget, I may have the resolution or White Balance or ISO or God knows what set to something screwy and spoil all my shots. I'll see WB problems on the LCD, but I won't notice if I left my D at ISO 3, or SMALL image size from the night before unless I look very carefully. Even with the manual, I could not figure out how to set a custom white balance,. When I took an exposure with the ExpoDisc, that image never showed up in the "D" selection area. The lexicon is totally different in Nikon, and we never did figure it out. How the heck do you set custom white balance on a D using ExpoDisc?? Thanks. Phil.
